What it took
The problem
CMS is an international law firm with over 10,000 professionals. Its lawyers handle large volumes of contracts, regulatory questions and due diligence documents. The firm wanted lawyers to spend less time on routine reading and drafting, and it needed a tool with strong security and governance.
What they built
CMS rolled out Harvey, a legal AI platform, to its lawyers. Lawyers use it to review contracts and list the issues and negotiation points, to pull insights from curated legal material, and to analyze large sets of documents across jurisdictions. In December 2025 the firm extended access to all 21 member firms in more than 50 countries.
How they did it
CMS announced a global partnership with Harvey in March 2024 and said it had piloted the tool in 2023. Harvey's customer story says CMS began with a trial and then ran a pilot lasting twelve months, with 300 lawyers from several practice areas. The legal tech and innovation teams led onboarding, shared real use cases and encouraged lawyers to use the tool on live matters. By the summer of 2025, more than 3,000 lawyers were using it. The firm then decided to scale it firmwide.
Results
Harvey reports 95% adoption across the 3,000+ lawyers in the initial rollout. Before the December 2025 expansion, CMS counted more than 1,100 daily active users and nearly 3,000 monthly users. CMS's own analysis found that 93% of users reported productivity gains, equal to up to 117.9 hours saved per lawyer per year. The firm says it reinvests this time in higher-value work.

Lessons for your project
Pilot with a few hundred lawyers across several practice areas before a firmwide decision. CMS ran a twelve-month pilot with 300 lawyers and let usage spread from there.
Treat adoption as a program, not a software install. CMS had its legal tech and innovation teams run onboarding and share real examples from live matters.
Let lawyers tell each other what works. CMS says stories from colleagues created momentum across jurisdictions and practice groups.
Ask users to self-report time saved and publish the method. CMS's hours figure is a survey-style estimate, so state it as one.
Caveats
- The adoption figure comes from Harvey's own customer story. The productivity figures come from CMS's own 'initial analysis' as stated in its press release. No independent audit is cited.
- Hours saved per lawyer is an upper bound ('up to') based on user-reported gains, not measured time tracking.
- The Harvey customer story has no date printed on the page, so its date is left out. It says 7,200 lawyers; the CMS press release says over 7,000 lawyers and staff. The two counts are not the same measure and are not combined here.
- The deployed date uses March 2024, when CMS announced its global partnership with Harvey. The same release says a pilot with Harvey began in 2023, and the Harvey page describes a pilot with a start date it does not give.
- No source names the underlying AI model.
