Manipal Hospitals
Manipal Hospitals uses Gemini to cut nurse handover time from 90 minutes to 20
Manipal Hospitals, a large Indian hospital chain, built a Gemini-based tool that turns patient records into structured shift-handover summaries for nurses. It reports handover time falling from 90 minutes to 20, with the tool live in 23 hospitals.

What it took
The problem
Manipal Hospitals serves nearly 7 million patients a year across 37 hospitals. When a nurse's shift ends, they must pass the patient's condition and care plan to the incoming nurse. With more than 10,500 beds, the volume of data made this slow, and the hospital says nurses routinely added about 90 minutes to their shifts to write and read the reports. It links this to fatigue, mistakes and lower job satisfaction.
What they built
A tool that produces a handover summary on demand. When a nurse asks for one, the system pulls the patient's records and has Google's Gemini model write a short report in the ISBAR format (Identify, Situation, Background, Assessment, Recommendation), a standard structure for clinical handovers.
How they did it
Patient data from the hospital's TrakCare record system flows in near real time to a data store on Google Cloud. A time-based filter picks only the information relevant to the nurse's shift, and only that structured data goes to Gemini on Vertex AI. Manipal calls this controlled generation and says it improves the accuracy and consistency of the report; it gives no figures for errors or invented content. Google Cloud Consulting led the build from idea to production, starting with a minimum viable product and holding more than eight rounds of sessions with nurses. A pilot ran at one hospital before the rollout. A Google press release says Deloitte supported Manipal on the wider programme.
Results
Manipal reports that handover time dropped from 90 minutes to 20. The tool is live in 23 hospitals and used by more than 5,000 nurses every day. The hospital says the time saved lets nurses focus on direct patient care and that the process is less exposed to errors from handwritten notes and fatigue.
Lessons for your project
Filter before you generate. Manipal selects the relevant shift data first and sends only that to the model, which it says keeps summaries accurate and consistent.
Design the output format with the end users. Over eight rounds of sessions with nurses shaped the handover report, which Manipal says made it clinically useful from day one.
Prove it in one hospital first. A single-site pilot tested performance and safety before the rollout to 23 hospitals.
Build on a recognised clinical format. The summaries follow ISBAR, a standard handover structure, and Manipal says the nurse sessions made it clinically useful from day one.
Caveats
- The results are reported by Manipal and Google Cloud, in a Google Cloud blog post co-written by Manipal's chief nursing manager and a Google consultant. No independent measurement is cited.
- Sources give different percentages for the same change (a 70% reduction in the blog, 78% in a trade-press article and press release). Only the stated minutes are used here, and the percentages are not reproduced.
- The blog says nurses added about 90 minutes to their shifts for creating and receiving reports. It does not explain how the 20 minutes was measured.
- No go-live date is given. The year 2025 is the year of the first source reporting results (a press release dated 2025-04-09) and the blog is dated 2025-07-12.
- Healthcare IT News and the press release also report a separate ePharmacy result (order processing from 15 minutes to under five). It is a different system and is not covered here.
